In the US and most of Canada, the fall back time change happens at 2:00 AM on Sunday, November 1, 2026, when clocks go back to 1:00 AM. In the UK and the EU, clocks go back a week earlier, on Sunday, October 25, 2026. You get one extra hour in bed that night, but your body clock doesn't move with the wall clock, so the week after can bring early wake-ups.
The easiest fix is to shift your sleep 15 minutes later a day for the four days before. The daylight saving time sleep planner builds that schedule from your own bedtime and wake-up time.

Clocks go back on November 1, 2026 in the US and October 25, 2026 in the UK and EU. Here's the detail by region.
| Region | Clocks go back | Local time |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Sunday, November 1, 2026 | 2:00 AM becomes 1:00 AM |
| Canada (most provinces) | Sunday, November 1, 2026 | 2:00 AM becomes 1:00 AM |
| United Kingdom | Sunday, October 25, 2026 | 2:00 AM becomes 1:00 AM |
| European Union | Sunday, October 25, 2026 | Same moment across the EU |
US daylight saving time ends on the first Sunday in November and starts on the second Sunday in March, according to NIST, the federal agency that keeps official US time.
Who doesn't change the clocks?
Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time all year, so nothing changes there on November 1. (The Navajo Nation in Arizona does observe daylight saving time.) Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands and American Samoa don't change either. In Canada, most of Saskatchewan and all of Yukon stay on the same time year-round.
Do we gain an hour of sleep when the clocks fall back?
Yes, but only on paper, and only for one night. Saturday night is 25 hours long. If you go to bed at your usual time and sleep until your usual time by the new clock, you get an extra hour.
The catch is what happens next. Your body clock is still running on the old time. If you normally wake at 6:30 AM, your body expects to wake at what the clock now calls 5:30 AM. Many people find themselves wide awake an hour before the alarm for several days, and sleepy an hour earlier in the evening too.
That's why the extra hour can feel like it disappears. You bank it Saturday night, then lose bits of it to early wake-ups through the week.
The 4-day fall back plan (10:30 PM to 6:30 AM sleeper)
Move your bedtime and wake-up time 15 minutes later each day, starting Wednesday, so your body is already on the new time by Sunday. Here's the plan for someone who usually sleeps 10:30 PM to 6:30 AM in the US. Times on the plan days are on the old (current) clock.
| Day | Bedtime | Wake-up | Shift |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wed, Oct 28 | 10:45 PM | 6:45 AM | +15 min |
| Thu, Oct 29 | 11:00 PM | 7:00 AM | +30 min |
| Fri, Oct 30 | 11:15 PM | 7:15 AM | +45 min |
| Sat, Oct 31 | 11:30 PM | 7:30 AM | +60 min |
| Sun, Nov 1 onward | 10:30 PM | 6:30 AM | New clock, back to normal |
On Saturday night you go to bed at 11:30 PM, which becomes 10:30 PM once the clocks change. You wake at 6:30 AM on the new clock, which is the 7:30 AM your body has been rehearsing. No early wake-up, no lost hour.
In the UK or EU, run the same steps from Wednesday, October 21 to Saturday, October 24.

How to make the shift hold
Light and timing do most of the work. A few habits help your body clock follow the plan:
- Get daylight in the late afternoon. Evening light nudges your body clock later, which is the direction you want for fall back.
- Keep mornings dim on plan days if you wake before your new alarm. Stay in bed or keep lights low rather than starting your day.
- Move dinner and caffeine with your bedtime. If bedtime is 15 minutes later, your caffeine cutoff can be too. The caffeine calculator finds it.
- Don't nap away the evening. If you get sleepy at 9:30 PM in the first few days, a short walk or a brighter room helps you hold on.
- Keep the wake-up time steady once you're there. A consistent wake time is what locks in a new schedule, the same principle behind fixing a sleep schedule fast.
What if you skip the plan?
You'll probably wake early for a few days, then settle. Fall back is the gentler direction, much like flying west, because your body clock finds it easier to run later than earlier. The east vs. west jet lag guide explains why.
If you'd rather not plan ahead, use the extra hour Saturday night, then keep your normal wake-up time by the new clock from Sunday on. Expect the early wake-ups to fade over the week. If you're short on sleep afterward, check your total with the sleep calculator and aim for a bedtime that gives you 5 or 6 full cycles.
When do clocks spring forward in 2027?
In the US and most of Canada, clocks spring forward at 2:00 AM on Sunday, March 14, 2027. That's the harder change, because you lose an hour and have to shift earlier. The same planner works in reverse: move your schedule 15 minutes earlier a day for four days beforehand.
