How much caffeine is in a K-Cup? A regular coffee K-Cup has roughly 95 mg, about the same as an 8 oz cup of brewed coffee. Keurig says the caffeine in its coffee pods is on par with brewed coffee, and that choosing a bigger brew size doesn't change it: the coffee in the pod is pre-measured, so a larger cup is just more water.
Keurig doesn't publish a single mg figure, so the 95 mg here is an estimate based on USDA's value for brewed coffee. If your box lists caffeine, use that number instead. Either way, the caffeine calculator shows what one pod leaves in you at bedtime.

Plan on about 95 mg per regular coffee pod, as an estimate. USDA FoodData Central lists brewed coffee at 40 mg of caffeine per 100 grams, which is about 95 mg in an 8 oz cup, and Keurig describes pod coffee as on par with brewed coffee.
| Pod | Caffeine (estimate) |
|---|---|
| 1 regular coffee K-Cup | about 95 mg |
| 2 regular coffee K-Cups | about 190 mg |
| 1 decaf K-Cup | about 2 to 15 mg (typical decaf range) |
| For comparison: brewed coffee, 8 oz | about 95 mg |
| For comparison: espresso, 1 shot | about 63 mg |
Real pods vary by brand, roast and blend, the same way any coffee does. Treat 95 mg as a middle estimate, not a lab result for your specific pod.
Does a bigger brew size mean more caffeine?
No. Keurig says the brew size doesn't change the caffeine, because the amount of coffee in the pod is fixed. Pressing the 12 oz button instead of the 6 oz button runs more water through the same grounds. You get a bigger, weaker-tasting cup with about the same caffeine.
| Brew size, one pod | Caffeine (estimate) | Strength per ounce |
|---|---|---|
| 6 oz | about 95 mg | strongest |
| 8 oz | about 95 mg | |
| 10 oz | about 95 mg | |
| 12 oz | about 95 mg | weakest |
This is the opposite of drip coffee, where a bigger mug really does mean more caffeine: USDA's figure works out to about 142 mg in 12 oz of brewed coffee. So a 12 oz Keurig cup may have noticeably less caffeine than a 12 oz mug from a coffee pot. If you want more caffeine from a Keurig, it takes a second pod, not a bigger button.
How much caffeine is in a K-Cup pod vs a Keurig cup?
They're the same thing: the caffeine in your Keurig cup is whatever was in the pod. Whether people call it a K-Cup, a pod or a Keurig cup, one regular coffee pod is roughly 95 mg no matter which size you brew. Two pods in one big mug is roughly 190 mg, about two cups of coffee.
How much caffeine is in a Donut Shop K-Cup?
We don't have a verified caffeine figure for Donut Shop pods, so we don't give one here. For a regular (not decaf) Donut Shop pod, the general estimate of roughly 95 mg per pod is a reasonable starting point. If the box lists caffeine, go with the box.
How much coffee is in a K-Cup?
Each pod holds a pre-measured amount of ground coffee, and the exact amount varies by brand and roast. Keurig doesn't give one number for all pods, so check the box if you want the grams. What matters for sleep is that the amount is fixed: the pod, not the brew size, sets your caffeine.
K-Cup vs coffee shop drinks
One pod is a moderate dose next to most coffee-shop orders. A grande Starbucks Caffè Americano, for example, has 225 mg, more than two pods' worth. Our Americano guide has the shot-by-shot numbers, and the espresso guide covers lattes and cappuccinos built on shots.
What's the latest time to drink a K-Cup before bed?
For an 11 PM bedtime, finish a regular K-Cup by about 1:22 PM, and a two-pod mug by about 8:22 AM. These are the times each falls below 25 mg by bedtime, using the site's average 5-hour caffeine half-life.
| K-Cup | Caffeine (estimate) | Hours before bed | Bedtime 10 PM | Bedtime 11 PM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 regular pod, any brew size | about 95 mg | 9 h 38 min | 12:22 PM | 1:22 PM |
| 2 regular pods | about 190 mg | 14 h 38 min | 7:22 AM | 8:22 AM |
| 1 decaf pod | 15 mg or less | already under 25 mg | any time | any time |
A decaf pod starts under the line, but several decaf cups in an evening add up. See decaf coffee before bed if you're sensitive.
Here's what's left at 11 PM, depending on when you brew:
| K-Cup at | 1 pod (95 mg) | 2 pods (190 mg) |
|---|---|---|
| 7 AM | 10 mg | 21 mg |
| 11 AM | 18 mg | 36 mg |
| 1 PM | 24 mg | 48 mg |
| 3 PM | 31 mg | 63 mg |
| 5 PM | 41 mg | 83 mg |
| 7 PM | 55 mg | 109 mg |
The 25 mg line is a rule of thumb this site uses, not an official limit. People clear caffeine at different speeds, and pregnancy and some medications slow it down. Falling asleep fine doesn't mean caffeine had no effect: in an at-home study, a large dose taken 6 hours before bed cut total sleep by more than an hour.
How to use your Keurig without losing sleep
- Switch to decaf pods after lunch. It's the easiest swap a pod machine offers.
- Don't count on a big brew size to stretch one pod. It's the same caffeine either way, just more water.
- Count pods across the day. Four regular pods are roughly 380 mg, close to the 400 mg a day the FDA cites for healthy adults. The caffeine limit calculator adds it up with everything else you drink.
- Check your own times in the caffeine calculator.
