How much caffeine is in a Starbucks Refresher? A grande (16 oz) Refresher has about 50 mg of caffeine, a tall about 25 mg, a venti about 75 mg and a trenta about 100 mg, according to Starbucks. The Lemonade versions and the coconutmilk drinks like the Pink Drink carry the same amounts. The newer Energy Refreshers are much stronger: about 100 mg for a tall up to about 175 mg for a trenta.
So a regular grande Refresher has about half the caffeine of an 8 oz cup of brewed coffee (about 95 mg). To see what yours leaves in you at bedtime, plug it into the caffeine calculator.

Starbucks lists about 25 mg for a tall, 50 mg for a grande, 75 mg for a venti and 100 mg for a trenta. These figures come from Starbucks' US menu and nutrition data, checked in October 2026, and Starbucks marks them as approximate.
| Size | Volume | Refresher (standard) | Energy Refresher |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tall | 12 fl oz | about 25 mg | about 100 mg |
| Grande | 16 fl oz | about 50 mg | about 125 mg |
| Venti | 24 fl oz | about 75 mg | about 150 mg |
| Trenta | 30 fl oz | about 100 mg | about 175 mg |
| For comparison: brewed coffee | 8 fl oz | about 95 mg |
The standard numbers work out to about 25 mg per size step. Starbucks' menu now lists three caffeine choices on each Refresher: caffeine-free, light caffeine (the standard drink, about 50 mg in a grande) and extra caffeine, which turns it into an Energy Refresher (about 125 mg in a grande).
Where does the caffeine in a Refresher come from?
From green coffee extract. Starbucks' ingredient list for the Strawberry Açaí Refresher includes a green coffee extract blend with B vitamins. Green coffee comes from unroasted beans, so the drink has caffeine without tasting like coffee.
That's why a Refresher can surprise people. It tastes like fruit juice, but a trenta has about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.
Do Lemonade Refreshers and the Pink Drink have the same caffeine?
Yes. Starbucks lists the same 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg by size for the Lemonade Refreshers and the coconutmilk drinks. The lemonade or coconutmilk replaces the water, but the caffeine comes from the same base.
| Drink | Tall | Grande | Venti | Trenta |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strawberry Açaí Refresher | 25 mg | 50 mg | 75 mg | 100 mg |
| Mango Dragonfruit Refresher | 25 mg | 50 mg | 75 mg | 100 mg |
| Mango Strawberry Refresher | 25 mg | 50 mg | 75 mg | 100 mg |
| Strawberry Açaí Lemonade Refresher | 25 mg | 50 mg | 75 mg | 100 mg |
| Mango Dragonfruit Lemonade Refresher | 25 mg | 50 mg | 75 mg | 100 mg |
| Pink Drink | 25 mg | 50 mg | 75 mg | 100 mg |
| Dragon Drink | 25 mg | 50 mg | 75 mg | 100 mg |
The other drinks on the Refreshers menu, such as the Mango Dream and the Cannon Ball Drink, are listed with the same figures.
How much caffeine is in a Starbucks Energy Refresher?
About 100 mg for a tall, 125 mg for a grande, 150 mg for a venti and 175 mg for a trenta. Starbucks lists the same numbers for every Energy Refresher flavor, including the Lemonade versions and the Pink Energy Drink and Dragon Energy Drink.
A grande Energy Refresher has more caffeine than an 8 oz cup of coffee, and a trenta has close to two cups' worth. If you liked the old Refresher as a light afternoon drink, check which version you're ordering. For more on how high-caffeine drinks affect the night, see energy drinks and sleep.
Does a Starbucks Refresher have more caffeine than coffee?
No, a regular Refresher has less caffeine than coffee in every size up to venti, and a trenta is about even with an 8 oz cup. The Energy Refreshers are a different story.
| Drink | Caffeine |
|---|---|
| Grande Refresher | about 50 mg |
| Venti Refresher | about 75 mg |
| Brewed coffee, 8 oz | about 95 mg |

What's the latest time to drink a Starbucks Refresher?
For an 11 PM bedtime, finish a grande Refresher by about 6:00 PM, a trenta by about 1:00 PM and a grande Energy Refresher by about 11:23 AM. These are the times each drink falls below 25 mg by bedtime, using an average 5-hour half-life.
| Bedtime | Grande (50 mg) | Venti (75 mg) | Trenta (100 mg) | Energy grande (125 mg) | Energy trenta (175 mg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10:00 PM | 5:00 PM | 2:05 PM | 12:00 PM | 10:23 AM | 7:58 AM |
| 10:30 PM | 5:30 PM | 2:35 PM | 12:30 PM | 10:53 AM | 8:28 AM |
| 11:00 PM | 6:00 PM | 3:05 PM | 1:00 PM | 11:23 AM | 8:58 AM |
| Midnight | 7:00 PM | 4:05 PM | 2:00 PM | 12:23 PM | 9:58 AM |
In hours before bed, that's 5 hours for a grande, about 7 h 55 min for a venti, 10 hours for a trenta or tall Energy Refresher, about 11 h 37 min for an Energy grande and about 14 h 2 min for an Energy trenta. A tall regular Refresher starts at about 25 mg, so it's already at this site's line when you drink it.
How much Refresher caffeine is left at bedtime?
A trenta Refresher at 4 PM still leaves about 38 mg in you at 11 PM. The table uses the calculator's math: remaining caffeine = dose x 0.5^(hours / 5), for an 11 PM bedtime.
| Drink at | Grande (50 mg) | Trenta (100 mg) | Energy grande (125 mg) | Energy trenta (175 mg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Noon | 11 mg | 22 mg | 27 mg | 38 mg |
| 2 PM | 14 mg | 29 mg | 36 mg | 50 mg |
| 4 PM | 19 mg | 38 mg | 47 mg | 66 mg |
| 6 PM | 25 mg | 50 mg | 63 mg | 88 mg |
This site uses about 25 mg at bedtime as a sensible ceiling. It isn't an official limit, just a useful line. Falling asleep fine doesn't prove the drink had no effect: in an at-home study, a large caffeine dose taken 6 hours before bed cut total sleep by more than an hour. For the full curve, see how long caffeine lasts.
These are averages. Some people clear caffeine much more slowly, and pregnancy and some medications can stretch it out a lot. If an evening Refresher is your habit, the caffeine-free option on Starbucks' menu is the simple fix.
How many Refreshers a day is too much?
For healthy adults, the FDA cites 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally linked to negative effects. That's about four trenta Refreshers, or a little over two trenta Energy Refreshers, before any coffee or soda. For a full daily tally, see how much caffeine is too much.
