How much caffeine is in Prime Energy? A 16 oz can of Prime Energy has 200 mg of caffeine, according to Prime's own product pages, and Prime labels it "For Ages 18+". That's about two 8 oz cups of brewed coffee. Prime Hydration, the sports drink in the bottle, is a different product and Prime lists it as caffeine-free.
At an average 5-hour half-life, 200 mg takes 15 hours to fall below 25 mg. The caffeine calculator works out your own cutoff for any drink and bedtime.

Prime lists 200 mg of caffeine for Prime Energy, now sold in a 16 oz can. Each Prime Energy flavor page we checked in November 2026 shows the same panel: zero sugar, 200 mg caffeine, for ages 18+, and "New 16oz Size".
| Prime product | Size | Caffeine (Prime's figure) |
|---|---|---|
| Prime Energy (Original, Strawberry Lemonade and other flavors) | 16 fl oz can | 200 mg |
| Prime Hydration | bottle | caffeine-free |
| For comparison: brewed coffee | 8 fl oz | about 95 mg |
Prime's pages call the 16 oz can a new size, so if you have an older or different-size can, the caffeine line on the label is the number to trust.
Is Prime Energy the same as Prime Hydration?
No. Prime Energy is a caffeinated energy drink in a can, and Prime Hydration is a caffeine-free sports drink in a bottle. They share a brand name and similar flavor names, which is exactly why people mix them up.
Prime's page for Prime Hydration lists it as caffeine-free, with coconut water and electrolytes. Prime Energy carries 200 mg of caffeine and the 18+ label. The American Academy of Pediatrics makes the same split in its clinical report on these drinks: sports drinks and energy drinks are significantly different products, and the terms shouldn't be used interchangeably. If you're buying for someone else, check whether the label says Energy or Hydration before you hand it over.
Is Prime Energy OK for kids and teens?
No. Prime labels Prime Energy "For Ages 18+", and pediatric experts advise against energy drinks for children and teens. The FDA notes that medical experts advise against energy drinks for children and teens because of their sugar and caffeine, and that too much caffeine in young people can cause a racing heart, high blood pressure, anxiety and sleep problems.
The American Academy of Pediatrics goes further: its clinical report concludes that caffeine and other stimulants in energy drinks have no place in the diet of children and adolescents. Prime Energy is easy to find wherever drinks are sold, so it's worth knowing the brand's own label draws the line at 18. If a child or teen has had one and feels unwell, with a racing heart, chest pain or severe anxiety, contact a doctor.
Is Prime Energy stronger than Red Bull, Monster or coffee?
Yes, per can. A 16 oz Prime Energy has 200 mg, compared with 151 mg in a 16 oz Red Bull, 160 mg in a 16 oz Monster and about 95 mg in an 8 oz cup of coffee.
| Drink | Caffeine |
|---|---|
| Brewed coffee, 8 oz | about 95 mg |
| Red Bull, 16 oz | 151 mg |
| Monster Energy, 16 oz | 160 mg |
| Prime Energy, 16 oz | 200 mg |

How much Prime Energy caffeine is left at bedtime?
A Prime Energy at 2 PM still leaves about 57 mg in you at 11 PM. The table uses the calculator's math: remaining caffeine = dose x 0.5^(hours / 5), for an 11 PM bedtime.
| Can at | Caffeine left at 11 PM (200 mg can) |
|---|---|
| 8 AM | 25 mg |
| 10 AM | 33 mg |
| Noon | 44 mg |
| 2 PM | 57 mg |
| 4 PM | 76 mg |
| 6 PM | 100 mg |
This site uses about 25 mg at bedtime as a sensible ceiling. It isn't an official limit, just a useful line. A can at 6 PM leaves about as much caffeine at bedtime as a full cup of coffee.
What's the latest time to drink a Prime Energy?
For an 11 PM bedtime, finish a 16 oz Prime Energy by about 8:00 AM to have less than 25 mg left by bed. That's 15 hours at an average half-life.
| Bedtime | Latest time for a Prime Energy |
|---|---|
| 10:00 PM | 7:00 AM |
| 10:30 PM | 7:30 AM |
| 11:00 PM | 8:00 AM |
| Midnight | 9:00 AM |
These are averages. If caffeine tends to linger for you, the calculator's high-sensitivity setting moves the cutoff earlier. In an at-home sleep study, a large caffeine dose taken 6 hours before bed cut total sleep by more than an hour. For more, see energy drinks and sleep.
How many Prime Energy drinks a day is safe?
For healthy adults, the FDA cites 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally linked to negative effects. That's two Prime Energy cans with nothing else, or one can plus about two cups of coffee. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, have a heart condition or take medications, talk to your health care provider about a lower limit. For a full daily tally, see how much caffeine is too much.
