If you go to bed at 3:00 AM, wake up at 10:45 AM for 5 full sleep cycles (7.5 hours). If you have a normal morning alarm, the least bad options are 7:45 AM (3 cycles, 4.5 hours) or 6:15 AM (2 cycles, 3 hours). All assume about 15 minutes to fall asleep.
The honest version: unless you can sleep until late morning, a 3 AM bedtime means a short night, and tomorrow will be harder than you expect.
Free toolSleep CalculatorBest bedtime or wake-up time, based on 90-minute sleep cycles. If I go to bed at 3 AM, when should I wake up?
If your morning is free, 10:45 AM. That's a full 7.5 hours, and it's the only option on this page that meets the 7-hour minimum for adults.
| Cycles | Sleep | Wake-up time |
|---|---|---|
| 2 cycles | 3 h | 6:15 AM |
| 3 cycles | 4.5 h | 7:45 AM |
| 4 cycles | 6 h | 9:15 AM |
| 5 cycles | 7.5 h | 10:45 AM |
| 6 cycles | 9 h | 12:15 PM |
If you can't sleep that late, 9:15 AM (6 hours) is the next best. After that, the numbers drop fast.
When you have to be up at 6, 7 or 8 AM
With a normal alarm, you'll get somewhere between about 3 and 5 hours of sleep. At that range, how you wake up matters almost as much as how long you sleep, because an alarm in the middle of deep sleep can leave you groggy for a long time.
| Alarm | Sleep you get | Where you wake | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6:00 AM | 2 h 45 min | Late in cycle 2 | Rough |
| 6:15 AM | 3 h | End of cycle 2 | Best of the early options |
| 6:30 AM | 3 h 15 min | Just into cycle 3 | Often groggy |
| 7:00 AM | 3 h 45 min | Mid-cycle | Often groggy |
| 7:30 AM | 4 h 15 min | Late in cycle 3 | Rough |
| 7:45 AM | 4 h 30 min | End of cycle 3 | Best if you can wait |
| 8:00 AM | 4 h 45 min | Just into cycle 4 | More sleep, may feel heavier |
| 8:30 AM | 5 h 15 min | Mid-cycle | More sleep, often groggy |
Rules of thumb:
- If you can push your alarm to 7:45, do. Four and a half hours is meaningfully better than three.
- If your alarm is fixed at 6:00 or 6:30, nudging it to 6:15 is a small change that often makes the wake-up easier.
- More total sleep still wins on balance. If you're choosing between 7:45 and 8:30, the extra 45 minutes probably helps more than it hurts, even if waking feels worse.

Is it even worth going to bed at 3 AM?
Yes, in almost every case. Even 3 hours of sleep takes the edge off sleep pressure and includes a good share of deep sleep, which is concentrated early in the night. You'll be far better off than if you stay up.
The exception is when you have less than about 90 minutes before you have to be up. Then it gets closer, and sleep 1 hour or stay up walks through that choice.
What a 3 AM night does to tomorrow
Three to five hours of sleep is the range where the day after is noticeably impaired. For more on the lower end, see is 4 hours of sleep enough.
The most serious risk is driving. In a study of about 6,800 drivers involved in crashes, those who had slept 4 hours in the previous 24 had about 2.9 times the odds of causing their crash compared with drivers who slept 7 to 9 hours, and those who slept under 4 hours had about 15 times the odds. A 3 AM bedtime with a 7 AM alarm puts you in that last group. Take transit, get a ride or wait if you can.
To get through the day:
- Bright light right after you wake up.
- Caffeine in the morning only, so tonight isn't another late one.
- A 20-minute nap in the early afternoon if you can fit one in.
- Bed at your normal time tonight, or up to an hour earlier. Don't try to sleep at 8 PM.
If 3 AM is becoming your normal bedtime
Going to bed at 3 AM once is a bad night. Doing it most nights, with a daytime alarm, means your body clock has drifted and you're running on chronic short sleep.
A few common reasons:
- Your clock has drifted late from screens, late light and irregular wake-up times
- Late shifts that end at midnight or later. If this is you, the shift work sleep calculator builds a sleep window around your shifts.
- Lying awake for hours before you finally drop off
If your clock has drifted, you don't have to fix it slowly. How to fix your sleep schedule fast has 1-day, 3-day and 1-week plans, all built around fixing your wake-up time first.
If you're going to bed on time but still awake at 3 AM most nights for weeks, that's different. It may be insomnia, and it's worth talking to a doctor.
