If you go to bed at 9:00 PM, wake up at 4:45 AM for 5 full sleep cycles (7.5 hours), or 6:15 AM for 6 cycles (9 hours). Both assume about 15 minutes to fall asleep.
A 9 PM bedtime is the right call for some people and a recipe for 4 AM wake-ups for others. Which one you are depends on how much sleep you actually need.
Free toolSleep CalculatorBest bedtime or wake-up time, based on 90-minute sleep cycles. If I go to bed at 9 PM, when should I wake up?
For most adults, 4:45 AM or 6:15 AM, depending on how much sleep you need. Both land at the end of a full cycle.
| Cycles | Sleep | Wake-up time |
|---|---|---|
| 3 cycles | 4.5 h | 1:45 AM |
| 4 cycles | 6 h | 3:15 AM |
| 5 cycles | 7.5 h | 4:45 AM |
| 6 cycles | 9 h | 6:15 AM |
If your alarm is somewhere in between, say 5:30, you'll get about 8 hours 15 minutes, which is plenty. Waking mid-cycle can feel a little heavier, but the extra sleep usually matters more. You can try any other bedtime in the sleep calculator.
Is 9 PM too early to go to bed?
No, not if you have an early start or you genuinely need 8 to 9 hours. Adult guidelines focus on getting at least 7 hours and keeping it regular, not on a particular clock time.
A 9 PM bedtime tends to fit:
- Early-shift workers. Bakers, delivery drivers, warehouse crews, nurses and anyone starting at 5 or 6 AM. With a 4:45 alarm, 9 PM is simply the bedtime that gets you enough sleep. The shift work sleep calculator builds your window around a shift start and commute.
- Natural early birds. Some people get sleepy by 9 no matter what. That's a real body-clock trait, not a bad habit. More in night owl or early bird.
- Older adults. Body clocks tend to shift earlier with age, so an earlier bedtime often feels natural.
- People catching up after a run of short nights, for a few days.
It's too early when you're lying awake until 10:30 staring at the ceiling, or when it leads to waking at 3 or 4 AM with nothing to do.
When a 9 PM bedtime means waking at 3 or 4 AM
If you only need about 7 hours, a 9 PM bedtime puts you awake around 4:15 AM, and that's not a sleep problem, it's arithmetic. Your body stops sleeping once it has had enough.
Here's when you'd naturally finish sleeping after a 9 PM bedtime, based on how much sleep you need:
| Sleep you need | Asleep by | You'll be done around |
|---|---|---|
| 7 hours | 9:15 PM | 4:15 AM |
| 7.5 hours | 9:15 PM | 4:45 AM |
| 8 hours | 9:15 PM | 5:15 AM |
| 8.5 hours | 9:15 PM | 5:45 AM |
| 9 hours | 9:15 PM | 6:15 AM |
So if you go to bed at 9 because you're bored or tired, and your alarm is at 7, you may be "done" two hours before it rings. The fix is usually to move bedtime later, not to try harder to stay asleep.

Should you go to bed at 9 PM if you wake at 7 AM?
Usually not. A 9 PM to 7 AM night is a full 10 hours in bed. Most adults need 7 to 9 hours, so you'd likely spend part of the night awake, which tends to make sleep lighter and more broken.
If your alarm is 7:00 AM, a bedtime around 11:15 PM gives 7.5 hours, or 9:45 PM gives 9 hours if you need the upper end. Going earlier than that only makes sense if you're recovering from a rough week.
If you routinely need 10 or more hours and still feel exhausted, that's worth mentioning to a doctor.
How to make a 9 PM bedtime work
A 9 PM lights-out means your evening effectively ends around 8. A few things make it realistic:
- Cut caffeine by late morning. An 8 oz coffee (about 95 mg) needs roughly 9.5 hours to fall below 25 mg, so for a 9 PM bedtime, finish it by about 11:20 AM. Check your own drinks with the caffeine calculator.
- Eat dinner by about 6:30 or 7. A big meal right before bed can make it harder to settle.
- Block the evening light in summer. When it's still bright at 9, blackout curtains or an eye mask help your brain accept that it's night.
- Keep the same wake-up time on days off. If you sleep until 8 on Saturday, 9 PM on Sunday will feel impossible.
- Tell the people you live with. A 9 PM bedtime works much better when the house quiets down with you.
