If you wake up at 11:00 AM, go to bed at 3:15 AM for 5 full sleep cycles (7.5 hours), or 1:45 AM for 6 cycles (9 hours). Both times include about 15 minutes to fall asleep.
An 11 AM alarm usually means a late night by design: a shift that ends near midnight or later, a student timetable with no morning classes, a weekend, or a body clock that runs very late. Below are the exact bedtimes for 11:00 and 11:30 AM, when an 11 AM wake-up is fine, and the caffeine cutoff for a 3:15 AM bedtime.
Free toolSleep CalculatorBest bedtime or wake-up time, based on 90-minute sleep cycles. What time should I go to bed if I wake up at 11 AM?
Go to bed at 3:15 AM for 7.5 hours of sleep, or 1:45 AM for 9 hours. These are the same times the sleep calculator gives for an 11:00 AM wake-up.
The math works backward from the alarm: subtract 15 minutes to fall asleep, then 90 minutes for each sleep cycle.
Bedtime = wake-up time - 15 minutes - (cycles x 90 minutes)
For 5 cycles: 11:00 AM minus 15 minutes is 10:45 AM, and 10:45 AM minus 7 hours 30 minutes is 3:15 AM.
| Cycles | Sleep | Bedtime for 11:00 AM |
|---|---|---|
| 6 cycles | 9 h | 1:45 AM |
| 5 cycles | 7.5 h | 3:15 AM |
| 4 cycles | 6 h | 4:45 AM |
| 3 cycles | 4.5 h | 6:15 AM |
Adults need at least 7 hours a night, so 1:45 AM and 3:15 AM are the two to aim for. If you usually take longer than 15 minutes to drift off, move the bedtime earlier by the difference: with 30 minutes, that's 3:00 AM or 1:30 AM.
What time should I go to bed if I wake up at 11:30 AM?
For an 11:30 AM wake-up, go to bed at 3:45 AM for 7.5 hours of sleep, or 2:15 AM for 9 hours. The 4-cycle option is 5:15 AM, which leaves only 6 hours.

Is waking up at 11 AM bad?
Not on its own. Waking at 11 AM is fine if you sleep 7 or more hours and keep roughly the same times every day. Adult guidelines from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine set a minimum amount of sleep, not a clock time.
Late timing is also partly age. Large surveys show sleep timing drifts later through the teens and is latest around age 20, then slowly moves earlier. Where an 11 AM wake-up tends to fit:
- Late shifts. If you get home around 1 or 2 AM from a bar, restaurant or evening shift, a 3:15 AM bedtime and 11 AM alarm is a full night. The second shift sleep schedule lays out a day around a late shift.
- Students without morning classes. A noon-first-class schedule makes 11 AM workable, as long as it stays steady through the week.
- Night owls. If you're truly not sleepy before 2 or 3 AM, a late schedule you can keep beats an early one you fight. The chronotype calculator estimates where you fall.
Is sleeping until 11 on weekends bad?
It is if your weekdays start much earlier. Sleeping until 11 on Saturday after a 7 AM alarm all week shifts your body clock several hours later, which makes Sunday night hard and Monday feel like jet lag. And catching up doesn't undo short weeknights: in a lab study, people who slept short during the week and slept in on the weekend still saw their insulin sensitivity drop once the short nights resumed.
A lie-in of about an hour is usually fine. More than that is often a sign you need more sleep on weeknights. Is it bad to sleep in on weekends covers social jet lag and how to catch up without wrecking Monday.
When should I stop caffeine if I go to bed at 3:15 AM?
With a 3:15 AM bedtime, finish a regular 8 oz coffee by about 5:37 PM. That's when it falls below 25 mg by bedtime, using the site's average 5-hour caffeine half-life.
| Drink | Caffeine | Latest time for a 3:15 AM bedtime |
|---|---|---|
| Brewed coffee, 8 oz | about 95 mg | 5:37 PM |
| Two coffees, 16 oz | about 190 mg | 12:37 PM |
| Espresso, 1 shot | about 63 mg | 8:35 PM |
| Black tea, 8 oz | about 47 mg | 10:42 PM |
| Cola, 12 oz | about 34 mg | 1:02 AM |
| Green tea, 8 oz | about 28 mg | 2:26 AM |
A late bedtime moves your cutoff later, but it still applies. The caffeine calculator works it out for your own drinks.
How do I keep an 11 AM schedule from drifting later?
Anchor the wake-up time and get daylight soon after you get up. With an 11 AM alarm you can miss most of the morning light that holds your body clock in place, especially in late fall and winter.
- Same alarm every day, weekends included, within about an hour.
- Go outside within an hour of waking, even for 10 minutes.
- Dim lights and screens for the last hour before bed.
- Use blackout curtains or an eye mask, since you'll be sleeping into daylight.
If you can't fall asleep before 3 or 4 AM even when you need to be up early, and it's hurting work or school, talk to a doctor or sleep specialist. A body clock stuck very late can be a sleep disorder called delayed sleep-wake phase disorder, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has treatment guidance for it.
